Botswana

Botswana

There is nothing nearly as magical to us as the transformation that is wrought by the annual flooding of the Okavango Delta with the waters of the Okavango River spilling onto the Kalahari sands of the Moremi Game Reserve and the surrounding conservancies and reserves. This landlocked flood fuels and feeds such a magnitude and proliferation of wildlife that it almost defies description. As the water percolates deep underground, shrinking waterways concentrate animals.

By dugout canoe (mokoro), 4x4 and on foot guests to the Okavango Delta are rewarded with an astonishing density and array of wildlife. Elephants, leopards, lions, wild dogs, kudu, impala, giraffes and zebras are seemingly everywhere. In this wildland, far from any human settlement, you will be deep in the heart of Africa.

Head East from the delta and you’ll cross the Linyanti and Savute wetlands, an even more secluded yet equally abundant wilderness.

In central Botswana, far from the delta’s verdant waterways, you can experience the barren expanse of the Makgadigadi Salt Pan, where you might just be lucky enough to greet the sunrise with a colony of meerkats.

Further still is the Mashatu Game Reserve, the land of giants, sitting on the edge of the remote northern reaches of South Africa’s Kruger National Park.

Its easy to extend any trip to southern Africa to include some time in Botswana, but its far better to make this the centerpiece of your itinerary and explore as much as possible.
